The book “Notes on the socio-economic history of Basilicata: from the French Decade to the uprisings of 1848” by Anna Bruno explores a crucial period in the history of Southern Italy. The volume begins with the reconquest of the Kingdom of Naples by the French, led by General Massena, on March 30th, 1806—an event that marked the start of the so-called “French Decade.” During this period, Napoleon Bonaparte appointed his brother Joseph as King of Naples, later replacing him in 1808 with Joachim Murat.

Murat, ruling until the return of the Bourbons in 1815, introduced significant socio-economic reforms, including the Napoleonic Code and the abolition of the feudal system. These reforms had a profound and lasting impact on the social, political, and economic structure of Basilicata and the entire South of Italy.

The book provides a detailed analysis of how these transformations influenced Lucanian society, laying the groundwork for the subsequent uprisings of 1848. Through rich storytelling and meticulous historical research, Anna Bruno offers an in-depth view of the socio-economic dynamics that characterized Basilicata during this turbulent period of change, contributing to a better understanding of the history of Southern Italy.
