The National Council of the Order of Journalists has unanimously approved the new Code of Ethics for Female and Male Journalists, a document that will replace the Unified Text of Journalists’ Duties. This important revision is the result of a lengthy consultative process between the Legal Commission, led by Enrico Romagnoli, and various bodies, unions, and associations. This process made it possible to integrate previous ethical Charters, incorporating them as an integral part of this new regulatory instrument.

The new Code will officially come into force on June 1, 2025, marking a significant change in the regulation of the journalistic profession. The document serves as a synthesis of the fundamental rules journalists must follow, with a modern and agile approach that reflects the challenges and developments of contemporary society.

Innovations and Key Points

Among the main new features introduced are the rules relating to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). These establish that, while AI can be a valuable support, it can never replace human journalistic work. Journalists will be required to explicitly declare the use of such tools and always verify the accuracy of the information processed.

Other central topics include:

  • Respect for vulnerable individuals, including minors, people who are ill, or those in situations of fragility.
  • Protection of privacy and right to be forgotten, balancing the right to information and the protection of personal identity.
  • Regulation of advertising and increased transparency in the use of sources and statistical data.

A document aligned with the times

The Code aims to both historicize and modernize the rules of the profession, providing journalists with an ethical and professional framework that promotes responsibility towards society. The ethical Charters, such as the Treviso Charter or the Rome Charter, will continue to serve as the main reference framework for ethical and respectful journalism.

A transitional period

Until May 31, 2025, the Unified Text of Journalists’ Duties will remain in force to allow all sector professionals to adapt to the new rules. This transition period will be fundamental for training professionals and ensuring full application of the Code.

With this update, the National Council of the Order of Journalists reaffirms its commitment to a free, independent, and responsible press, able to face future challenges with competence and respect for citizens.
